Playground Equipment for Toddlers

At KOMPAN we see the world from the child's perspective. When designing playground equipment for toddlers this means, quite lityerally, getting on our hands and knees and taking a good look around! In addition to height, their physique and attention span makes the world a new and demanding place for toddlers to find their way around. The playground and the playspace should contain clear play signals, colours, contrasts and sensory stimulating items.

Never forget that to the toddler, play is learning, so the more age-appropriate the playground, the safer, more pleasurable and educational the time spent - not just for the children but their parents too.

Playground Equipment for Children

At a time when the industrial standards were becoming more demanding and restricting innovation, KONPAN made the decision to move in a new direction. Platforms, barrier walls, and vertical posts were set aside and new playground equipment for children was developed. The concept was to make something that challenged the children, that made them stop and wonder, that met their needs for play and complexity, and that look or act like the playground equipment they had used when they were younger. The sculptures at the playgrounds were transparent like a skeleton yet came alive wehn the children arived. Colour was used in minimal doses as the children themselves are colourful. Bent and twisted shapes were used creating a chaos, like a foreign galaxy, that would challenge the children to investigate, explore and make this new space their own.

Playground Equipment - FREE PLAY

It was several French fathers who, as they were approaching mid-life and needed to keep moving, developed a multi-use framework where they could play soccer, tennisor badminton. They set up low barriers around a small soccer pitch, high enough to keep the ball in yet low enough to keep the important contact between those inside and outside. As this space was used, more activities were added, such as basketball, hockey, a track around the outside and benches for spectators. It became a kind of Social Area where all kinds of people of every age came to meet and move. The true spirit of Freegame had a new home, which is in tune with the most people play - they gather, make their own rules, and play to have fun, free to make their own game!
